The French Duo Ostinato comprises the ever-anticipated saxophone virtuoso Philippe Geiss and the refined pianist Marija Aupy. In their interplay, classical interpretation paradigms seamlessly go hand in hand with limitless improvisational freedom. Through this approach, they have created their unique language, blending various genres and performing the most captivating repertoire of world music. Being driven by an insatiable curiosity to explore the rich tonal possibilities of the kaleidoscopic saxophone also characterises the Latvian saxophone virtuoso Oskars Petrauskis. He will engage in an energetic saxophone dialogue with his French colleague, specially composed for the festival by the versatile jazz master Raimonds Petrauskis. Kārlis Vanags' trio will present his Triple Concerto for tenor saxophone, double bass, and percussion – Trio Colossus. Dedicated to the windy city of Liepāja, this opus playfully illuminates the most brilliant possibilities of sympho-jazz, featuring moments of reflection with lyrical ballads and spontaneous flashes of improvisation that pay homage to the jazz legend Sonny Rollins. The opening of the Saxophonia festival will be a sparkling celebration of saxophone music and genre-bending – come and indulge!
